Your realtors are professionals themselves, so when they say to hire a professional--it is always good to listen. Recently, we got a call about a hoarding situation in a Richmond home. The owner of the home had just bought it, but the previous owners were hoarders. This new customer knew that SERVPRO of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties had handled several hoarding clean-ups in the area. 

And, they would be right. Hoarding is a serious issue and can cause serious problems down the line along with making it harder to be able to buy or sell, said home. 

We always make sure to treat hoarding situations with care and compassion. Even though the customers were not the hoarders themselves, we know that was someone's home and those are their personal items; also, we know that some hoarding restoration needs are a loved one or family member of the customer. It took some time to put this event together because our team has been all over the United States this year helping communities recover from storm damages. We finally found the perfect afternoon to bring our team and their families together for a sweet treat. So, our team put together an event for all of our offices to have a local Hawaiian ice truck visit. We invited our employees and their families for an outside afternoon of fun. The rain didn't stop our team from having a great afternoon and enjoying Kona Ice from the Bluegrass. Having trouble with a drafty house this winter? 

Heating costs can throw a wrench into your winter budget. But you can limit the losses by addressing the gaps, cracks and waste that drive up fuel costs.

Follow these 5 tips to help get your winter budget back on track:

  1. Install weatherstripping--Seal a drafty door by installing foam or felt weatherstripping inside the door frame.
  2. Install a door sweep--A sweep is a flexible piece of rubber or plastic that's held to the door's lower edge by a strip of aluminum.
  3. Seal attic air leaks--Pull back attic insulation to find and seal cutouts in drywall for electrical fixtures, pipes, fans and outlets
  4. Use your window coverings: shades and drapes can conserve heat at night.

If you want to take it a step further, add attic insulation.

And replace your furnace filters monthly.

And, lastly --Grab a tube of caulk, a can of spray foam gap-sealer, a pencil and notepad, so you can plug those household leaks on your own.

Water Damage during Winter Time Equals Frozen Pipes

The winter season is here and it brings all the bad weather with it. Unfortunately, another aspect of cold weather is frozen pipes. 

Frozen pipes can cause more damage in your home than you think. Here are a few tips to get your home ready for frozen pipes this winter: 

1. Check sprinkler and irrigation system and make sure everything is turned off. 

2. Identify your home's freezing points. Check for areas such as crawl spaces, unheated rooms, basements, garages, and exterior walls that would be more prone to freezing. 

3. Know how to shut off your water: Locate the main water shut-off and hang a tag from it. 

4. Strengthen your home by eliminating sources of cold air near water lines. 

5. Protect your pipes: when pipes are exposed make sure to wrap them with insulation or heat tape (even fabric, towels, or newspaper can help)!

We get a lot of calls when someone's home has been damaged by water. One of their first questions is: What will you do when you arrive at my home?

We are here to answer that question for you. We have a certain SERVPRO standard of how we handle a water loss. We want to make sure you are safe first and foremost, and then we bring in our nine steps to make sure your home is restored with the proper procedures. 

First, we identify the source/type of water. This can depends on a variety of elements: drywall, ceilings, flooring, and class type. 

We scope your home and take-in the extent of the damage. 

We make sure to perform emergency water extraction if necessary and move or block furniture. We also inspect carpet pads and carpets. We apply the necessary disinfectants and utilize advanced drying equipment.

Here at SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties we value our educational facilities. One of our favorite events of the year is the Kentucky School Plant Management Association (KSPMA). 

This event has over 300 attendees and over 21 breakout sessions, not to mention the hundreds of vendors. We are the only restoration company to attend and we value the time we spend with the best of the best in facilities and education.

This year SERVPRO has partnered with another SERVPRO to bring you games, prizes, and lots of SERVPRO merch. We have spent the last two days teaching all of the superintendents, facilities directors, and other educational staff about what we can help with when it comes to minor and major disasters in the restoration field.

We want our schools to know that if they have a water or fire damages, along with other cleaning needs --we are here to help!

The winning pumpkin from the Garrard County Fiscal Court Office.

Every year SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties creates a Facebook contest called #SERVPROSpooksItForward. Our clients are offered pumpkins to decorate and we put them on our social media --the pumpkin with the most likes wins!

But, that's not all. 

The winning pumpkin's office not only gets a free lunch, but they get $200 donated on behalf of SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties to the charity of their choice. We have given to animal shelters, children's funds, food banks, and many others over the years. 

This year our winner wanted to donate money to the local park for special needs children to have specialized equipment. 

We love our pumpkin decorating contest and we love giving back to our local communities even more!
