Grease Fires in your Home

Have you ever wondered how to extinguish a grease fire?

Cooking a homemade meal is a great way to enjoy time with your family. Unfortunately, this timeless tradition can be dangerous. Fires can occur no matter how careful you are while cooking. The best way to ensure your home and family are safe from kitchen fires is to know how to battle one. Here are a few steps you can take to stay prepared for a fire in your kitchen.

Eliminate the Heat Source: Once you see smoke or a flame, you want to take the heat away. Unplug the stove or remove a pot from a burner and turn it off if you can safely reach the knobs. Oven mitts are a great way to protect yourself when trying to get the oven off.

Smother the Flames: If you have a lid nearby, this can help greatly with putting out the flames. Another way is to put baking soda on the fire. A fire extinguisher is the best option, but not everyone has them at all times. NEVER use water on a grease fire. This can cause dangerous damage and put your safety at risk.

Call 911 and Emergency Team: If the fire is out of hand, do not try to eliminate it yourself. Call 911 as soon as you can to help. You want to evacuate you and your family, and leave it to the professionals to safely put the fire out.

Following these tips can keep you and your family safe while cooking. Accidents happen, be prepared!
