Water Damage 101

If you’re reading this, it’s likely that you have experienced water damage at your residence. If so, then you are not alone! In fact, as many as 50% of homeowners in the US suffer some type of property damage caused by water each and every year. At SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties, we understand the importance of this problem and are here to help.

The following will provide an overview of what causes water damage and how our team can help with cleanup after water damage inhabits their property from a flooded basement.

Water damage can be caused by a variety of things, including leaks, burst pipes, floods, and storms.

Water can cause a lot of damage to your home, mainly because of the water’s ability to absorb into walls and insulation. When water stays in contact with wallboard or insulation for several hours, it can destroy the materials used to construct build-outs and interior walls as well as damage electrical systems. Our technicians have the equipment and training to keep moisture away from your belongings as they work quickly to remove all traces of water and dry out your home with high-efficiency dehumidifiers.

If you have water damage, call our offices today at 859-623-0000.

When Water Turns Into Mold Damage

8/10/2022 (Permalink)

Water and Mold: Do they go hand in hand?

Spring is typically the beginning of "mold season." Mold can create a pungent, unpleasant odor in parts of your home. Mold typically begins to grow right after winter is finishing up when temperatures slowly rise and rain increases. We all love those spring showers, but this can be a cause of mold sneaking into your home.

Sometimes the water can trickle into parts of your home without you even noticing. The worst time that this occurs is summer because of high temperatures. The water damage that has leaked sits as moisture where mold begins to grow.

When this condensation sits for an extended period of time and when homeowners cool down the inside, the mold takes over. If you do not keep an eye on those places where moisture and condensation pool --mold can cause severe damage.

If you suspect mold in your home, call our offices today. Our team can perform mold testing in your home to find out exactly how much and what kind of mold is in your home. We can make a plan to efficiently clean it.

A customer called one afternoon a few weeks ago with water damage in his basement. It was an after-hours phone call, so our call center picked up the call. Our team works 24/7 and 365 days when our customer needs us with water damage.

Our call center team contacted our home team so we could be contacting the customer within an hour to discuss their needs, and at the customer's home within four hours of the initial call. Our customer's bathtub had overflowed in their basement causing about half of the carpet to be impacted.

This customer's home was not majorly impacted and it was not with category 3 water, so they wanted to wait to have someone come out the next day.

Our team was there the next day getting the water up and returning this customer's home to "Like it never even happened."

The water damage had just occurred on the day that the customer called it in because he knew the sooner it could get cleaned up, the better.

The customer described that his flooring was vinyl and tile. There was no standing water but the water had gone all the way to the basement. The ceiling was wet in the basement and second floor. The water damage was severe, so we sent our trained technicians to this customer's home.

Our customer was happy that our team could come to help them on the first day of the damage.

Water Damage in Richmond Home

In this Richmond home, a leak in the basement was dripping for over ten hours. The bathroom tile and bedroom carpet that were located in that area were all impacted.

In this case, acting fast is the best option. We want to get to this service quickly so that we can prevent further water damage. First, a plumber needs to get the leak repaired before the remediation will fully begin to take effect. Once that happens, we can start drying out the carpet and other areas that are wet in the basement.

The aftermath of this bathroom water damage left multiple rooms affected. We ended up tearing up the flooring because the water had impacted all the way to the sub-floor. The small leak ended up being several small leaks, which is why we always recommend a professional in water damage emergencies.

This customer was happy he called SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties to the scene to help.

Did your water damage come from your washing machine?

10/27/2021 (Permalink)

Washing machines are a modern advancement that we are all thankful for; however, they can also create a modern problem that has your home floating. Washing machines can create water damage in your Richmond home.

Here are ways that water damage can go from inside to outside the machine:

  1. If your floor drain in your laundry area is full of debris or lint, it can create back-up that causes water to pool.
  2. External supply hoses, start a fill cycle on your machine and look for drips around the water supply connection hose. If the hoses themselves seem to be free of corrosion or rust but are still dripping, try replacing the internal washers to create a tighter seal.
  3. Check your internal hoses and lines. You want to make sure they are properly connected and clean. This way water does not leak and overfill or create a backup.
  4. Always check the seals of your washer. Over time, these places can wear and tear and create cracks that let water leak during the washing machine cycle. These damaged tub seals could be the cause and will need to be replaced, especially if you have owned your washer for a number of years or do several cycles a day, every day.

Call a local repair professional to check these issues if you are not sure yourself. It is always better to be prepared!

wet carpet Sewage is an emergency damage, residents of Richmond, Berea, Waco, and Mt. Vernon should call our offices for sewage damage clean-up.

We Clean the Yucky Stuff

When sewage damage occurs, it is treated a little differently than your average water damage. Water that is the result of sewage from a sewer system backup should be considered highly contaminated. This puts the water damage in a different category for clean-up. When water damage is a category 3, extra precaution is taken.

If you have sewage damage, it is best to call the professionals, but here a few tips if sewage damage happens in your home.

  • Call For Help: Get in touch with your sewage company to make sure the problem is not ongoing and will not happen again before you can get the first mess cleaned up.
  • Dry the Area: Call SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrad, & Lincoln Counties to bring equipment, PPE, and trained technicians to get the area dried out. Not only will we restore the area, but the reconstruction will have to take place since carpet, padding, drywall, and other structural necessities will have to be removed upon arrival.
  • Sanitize: Floodwater resulting from sewer damage can be toxic, so be thorough in your cleaning processes even after the water is dried out. Even sanitizing several times is not a bad idea.
  • Dehumidify: One piece of equipment that needs to be running at all times during sewage damage clean-up is a dehumidifier. This helps to keep mold at bay during the process.

Regular Maintenance

Why?
Water heaters should be maintained annually to prevent damage that could occur from buildup in the tank. Water heater damage when it leaks or causes other issues can be extensive in your home. The maintenance will include a water heater flush with a de-liming solution. This routine maintenance can extend the life of your unit as well as save on energy costs.

  • Flushing your water heater is an easy process. Turn off the water heater and allow the water to cool.
  • Turn off the water supply and connect a hose to your tanks drain valve and lead it outside.
  • Open all the hot water faucets to allow for a faster drain. When the tank is empty, turn the cold water supply back on to flush out the sediment at the bottom.
  • When you reconnect everything, leave your hot water faucets open until water runs to prevent air from being trapped.

When to perform maintenance?

Your water heater should last between 8 and 12 years with regular attention and maintenance, depending on the usage and model.

When you water heater is showing signs of wear, it's probably best to perform a few tune-ups.

We help with commercial water damages?

The answer is, yes. We service commercial water damages in the area as well as residential services. Many do not know that we have the capacity to handle both types of emergency damages.

In Richmond, last week a commercial building has a large water damage. There was standing water in an important building with a lot of documents and equipment. They needed service and fast.

Our team of trained professionals came out to the water damage that day after they had loaded to truck with over 200 air movers (which is another word for fan). Not only was that not enough we had to bring over 200 more to make sure the area was properly dried. So overall, we had 400 fans, and that is not including dehumidifiers.

This type of project takes special attention, because we need to get this commercial business back up and running as efficiently and effectively as possible. We had a huge team come out to make sure this project was in tip-top shape.

Our customers were impressed with the work our team had completed in such a short amount of time.

We stand by our motto of getting to our customers faster and our 1-4-8 policy.

Water can Hide Anywhere: Crawl Space Water Damage

4/20/2020 (Permalink)

Wet Crawl Space Water Damage

Crawl spaces are often forgotten when it comes to water damage. If your home has a crawl space, an area that has limited height and is typically used for electrical wiring, this space is often fall victim to water damage. Crawl spaces can have moisture, standing water, or staining within the crawl space, which will alert you to the water damage within.

If this crawl space is underneath your floors, this is caused by water that has seeped into the foundation of the home. If this crawl space is in your attic, that means you likely have a leak in your roof somewhere.

Often times, your crawl space can flood from ground water and not enter your home if it's a small amount. It's always a good idea to check your crawl space periodically if there's been an uptake in rain and flooding in your area.

If your crawl space does get water damage, call your local SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties today.

4 To Do’s When filling a Water Damage Claim

4/8/2020 (Permalink)

Here are a few tips on what to do when you are filing a water damage claim. It is always good to take extra steps when protecting your home and your family.

Prevent Additional Damage and Secure Valuables:

You have informed your insurance company of the disaster, now prevent additional damage to your property!  You may be advised to board up any broken doors or windows, tarp holes in your roof, turn off the water supply, remove excess water, etc. Also, remember to take your surviving valuables to a safe dry location to keep them in good condition.

Review your insurance policy:

Does homeowners insurance cover water damage? So many factors to look at, so you need to find out exactly what your own insurance policy covers. You may or may not have coverage for:

  • Floods
  • Sewer or drain backup
  • Accidental water damage from a heating or air conditioning system
  • Mold remediation
  • Restoration of water-damaged furnishings, electronics, and personal items

Review your existing policy carefully so that you can understand all the provisions and talk to your agent!

Record Proof of Water Damage

Take pictures and videos of your damaged property and preserve any broken parts that may have caused or allowed water damage to take place – this way, you will have indisputable evidence for your insurance claims. Have in mind that nothing should be thrown away and the scene should not be altered (as much as possible) until an adjuster comes to inspect the property.

Make a Detailed inventory about any Damaged Possessions

To get reimbursement for your damaged items, you will need a detailed inventory list stating the make and model number of every piece, its age and current condition, as well as the replacement cost and the actual cash value of individual items. Creating such a comprehensive inventory sheet is quite difficult and time-consuming, but is critical if you want to be paid for water-damaged contents.

If you have a water damage, call SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties today. We are here to help you.

What NOT to Do When Filing Insurance Claim for Water Damage

4/8/2020 (Permalink)

We showed you in a recent post what to do when filing a water damage insurance claim, but here are a few tips on what NOT to do when filing a water damage insurance claim. Keep your home and family safe with these tips.

Throw Anything Away

DO NOT THROW ANYTHING AWAY you will need evidence for your water damage claims. If your policy states that the damaged property should be available for inspection at any time throughout the claim, so you should not throw away any damaged items until the insurance company has authorized this in writing. If you dispose of your “evidence” too early, you risk having these items denied coverage or not paid for.

You are also advised to keep any receipts, credit card statements, and bank statements concerning your property as they can also help you support your claim and prove the values of your damaged items.

Make Permanent Repairs before You Have Approval from the Insurance Company

Your insurance company will want to inspect your property in order to determine what repairs will be required and how much they are going to cost. If you start reconstruction works before the insurance company has approved them, you may not be paid for the repairs. Large insurance claims always take long to settle and involve a lot of negotiations, so you must be patient and prepared to wait until you are certain that the restoration costs will be duly covered.

Keep these tips in mind when you have a water damage --call us at SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties help clean up the water damage in your flooded home.

How To Handle a Flooded Basement

3/31/2020 (Permalink)

One of the most dreaded things to happen when you turn on your light switch to head down the stairs to your basement is seeing water rising from the floor and headed up the walls.

Whether your flooded basement is the result of torrential rain, a broken dam, or melting winter snows, the result is almost always the same: unwanted standing water.

There are ways to get rid of the water that are better than others. These three tips will help keep your home safe even after the water has been cleaned up. Check these out below:

1. Switch Off the Utilities

Make sure the electricity is turned off. Power usage and water can make for an unsafe situation. If you can't find out where to turn your water off in your home, call your local utility company to help out.

2. Locate a Professional Team- like SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties

Many people panic when they find their basement floor flooded with water, which is completely understandable. The loss of stored items, children’s bedrooms, or an extra living area with all the additional items is not desired when filled with water. Calling a local company to clean up your water ensures that it's done the right way the first time.  We can get there faster and create a plan to create a better situation for the water to damage less of your property.

3. Remove the Standing Water

The first thing the water damage team will typically do is remove the standing water and investigate for signs of structural damage. Water removal is important because standing water can:

  • Encourage mold growth
  • Cause foundation damage
  • Ruin walls and insulation

Once the water is gone, the team can begin cleaning and disinfecting the area, and, if needed, technicians can generally begin rebuilding the damaged areas.

Call your local SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties today. We are here to help 24/7 with your emergency water damages.

Frozen Pipes Season is Here: Tips to Prevent

1/9/2020 (Permalink)

a house in the winter time with words and an orange logo house Let SERVPRO help you this winter!

Frozen pipes season is upon us. The weather is turning bitter and it's time to protect your home from damages.

Why are frozen pipes such a big deal? As the water that is left in your pipes freeze the water expands, which will thaw once the temperature reaches above freezing again. The buildup of the water can cause pipes to crack and break, damaging your home with a water damage.

There are simple and inexpensive ways to prevent this from happening.

Check out these tips to keep your home free from water damage this winter season:

1. Keep the heat on (use precaution when using space heaters, but they help to prevent pipes from freezing)

2.Apply heating tape

3. Add extra insulation to your pipes

4. Keep your cabinets open with pipes exposed underneath

5. Allow the faucet to drip, because running water relieves pressure in the system.

If pipes freeze and burst, it can cause a lot of water damage to the property and to their possessions. If you have water damage from burst pipes, call us today. We are here to help residents of Richmond, Irvine, Stanton, Waco, Berea, and many more areas surrounding Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties.

Clogged Toilet Water Damage

10/30/2019 (Permalink)

a toilet paper roll inside of a house with a servpro logo beside it Don't let a clogged toilet get you down. Call us today!

The worst thing that can happen after a long day of work is to go home to a clogged toilet. After using the bathroom, you notice the water in the toilet is not draining like it's supposed too.

If your toilet is overflowing, there are several steps you can take to stop the flooding and find the source of the problem.

If the toilet begins to overflow immediately after a flush, it’s likely that the toilet itself is clogged. First, stop the flow of water into the toilet to minimize flood damage. Remove the tank lid and press down on the flapper valve. This will prevent any more water from getting into the bowl. You want to make sure the water does not go over the sides. Once you’ve secured the flapper valve, lift the float that operates the tank fill valve to stop the tank from filling. Hold these in place for about a minute to cut off the toilet bowl water supply and allow the water level to return to normal.

If the water doesn’t start to go down, turn off the water valve behind the base of the toilet by turning it clockwise.

The next step--

Use a plunger to try to remove the blockage.

If plunging and clearing the drain doesn’t stop the overflowing problem, you’ll have to take a look inside the toilet tank. If your toilet overflows even without flushing, it’s possible that the clog is somewhere else in a drainpipe, possibly your main drain or sewer line.

In this situation, running water from any other source in the house can’t escape and backflows to the lowest exit in the system--your toilet. If you have a private septic system, it’s possible that the septic tank is full.

SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties do not clear out septic tanks, but we do aide in the process of cleaning bathrooms and other areas inside the home that were impacted by the overflow.

Water Safety at Home

8/7/2019 (Permalink)

We are no strangers to water in our line of business, but water can do more damage than just ruining the carpet in your home. We always give you tips on how to prevent water damage or how to work around water damage, but what should you do when the water is there on purpose and you have little ones around?

Water safety is a staple for summers around pools, lakes, and the ocean for families with little ones. Here are some water safety tips for at home to practice with your family:

  1. Never leave your child unattended around water. Babies can drown in as little as one inch of water.
  2. Watch kids when they are in or around water, without being distracted. Keep young children within arm’s reach of an adult.
  3. Once bath time is over, immediately drain the tub.
  4. Empty buckets, containers and kiddie pools immediately after use. Store them upside down so they don't collect water.
  5. Close toilet lids and use toilet seat locks to prevent drowning.
  6. Keep doors to bathrooms and laundry rooms closed and even consider locks.

When it comes to swimming there are even more in-depth tips to follow:

  1. Watch kids when they are in or around water, without being distracted. Keep young children within arm’s reach of an adult. Make sure older children swim with a partner every time.
  2. When children are swimming and there are several adults present, make sure kids are actively supervised at all times by choosing a Water Watcher.
  3. Install fences around home pools. A pool fence should surround all sides of the pool and be at least four feet tall with self-closing and self-latching gates.
  4. Teach children how to swim. Every child is different, so enroll children in swim lessons when they are ready. Consider their age, development and how often they are around water.
  5. Make sure kids learn how to swim and have water skills.

Learn CPR. It's as simple as that to help someone in need around a water emergency.

Keep these tips in mind the next time your family has a pool day or even when it's just bath time.

Water Damage in Your Home: How much is that going to cost?

5/17/2019 (Permalink)

Water Damage Expenses

Water damage becomes more expensive the longer it sits in your home. Water damage that has been extracted immediately is usually much smaller on the expense scale. Here are a few situations that can make water damage more expensive:

  • letting water damage sit longer than 24 hours
  • not calling a professional company to clean up the water and cleaning it up yourself
  • not drying out the walls that have been impacted causing mold damage later on
  • contents damage
  • structural damage
  • flooring damage for water damages in a high class, such as 2 or 3, that have to be replaced.

Any of those scenarios listed above can cause water damage to be more expensive in your home or business. We want to keep costs low for you and your insurance company --call the professionals today to keep you from ending up on the list of the more expensive side of water damage cleanup.

Is it time for a new Water Heater?

5/8/2019 (Permalink)

A water break can happen in a variety of ways in your home. A sump pump can fail, flooding can occur, but one of the most common is an old water heater.

Water heaters are not meant to last a lifetime in a home. The corrosion will build up and damage the tank, which leads to leaking and water damage in your home. The best way to avoid having that water damage emergency is to set a replacement date before the first signs of trouble occur in your water heater.

Many people do not know this, but water heaters should be inspected after ten years in use. Some customers even chose to replace their's sooner as to stay away from unforeseen damages.

Water damage happens from time to time, but taking steps to stop them from occurring can make them less-likely in your home.

Spring is Here --Check Your Home

5/7/2019 (Permalink)

Springtime means Sump Pump Time

There are many ways that your home can fail you this spring when it comes to water damage.

One of those is: sump pump failure.

When your home is prone to flooding from time to time you are at risk and should get a sump pump installed. Most of the time these are highly efficient ways to stop water from accumulating before it can cause a lot of damage.

In order to make sure your sump pump has not failed make sure you have it installed correctly, that it is plugged in, and powered. When checking the sump pump this spring make sure there are no stray debris to stop it from working properly.

On another note, homeowners who have a washer in the basement should install a sump pump for any accidents or mechanical failures that may occur with the washing machine.

Sump pumps are great ways to stop water from damaging your home this spring. Be on the lookout for more tips to keep your home water resistant this spring.

Water Resistant Flooring

4/4/2019 (Permalink)

After a water damage, most homeowners want a new flooring that "resists" water in the best possible way. No on wants more water damage after their first one has occurred.

There is a product called, water core laminate hardwood that is a great start for new flooring. Even if you are not a fan of laminate, this looks realistic and is water "resistant.”

Most of the time, depending on the class of water, changing the flooring of a home after a water damage is prevalent. There's a variety to choose from when it comes to new flooring. This is a great option for kitchens and basements.

This flooring will not hold up for flooding, but is still a good flooring product to have for spills and small leaks that may happen, or moisture in a basement.

This course teaches basic education for technicians and other team members in the science and practice of water damage restoration. Our marketing team went to learn more ways to help our customers. My pool is leaking --now what?

5/21/2018 (Permalink)

In our last blog, we mentioned ways to find out if you have a pool leak. If you read our former blog post and think that you may have a pool with a leak --then keep reading.

There are possible ways to help fix your pool --if it has a vinyl liner. (We recommend only trying these tips if you feel confident in your handy man abilities.)

Step 1: Never entirely drain a pool with a vinyl liner, as it could lead to drying and cracking later.

Step 2: See if your pool comes with a vinyl repair kit.

Step 3: Cut out the patch in a circle, and be sure to make it larger than the leaky spot.

Step 4: Cover the back of the circular patch with glue.

  • If you are not under water, apply the patch over the leak hole and apply pressure for 2 minutes.
  • If you leak is under water, fold the patch in half so that the glue will come in little contact with water. Apply pressure to the patch for 5 minutes.

Just keep swimming!

Is the pool leaking?

5/14/2018 (Permalink)

It's time for splashing with your favorite pool toy, lathering on the sunscreen, and putting on your favorite sunglasses to head to the pool.

We want your pool season to be fun and worry free. One thing that can put a damper on your pool season is a leaky pool. No one wants a damaged pool to ruin their summer fun.

We have tips on how to fix and find a leak that may have sprung up in your pool this summer:

  1. Place a 5-galloon bucket on the second step of your pool and use a marker to match the water level of your pool.
  2. Turn off any pump or other device in the pool.
  3. Wait about 24 hours and then return to check the status. If they both have gone down to the same level then you just have evaporation.

But, if the pool level has gone down but the bucket has not, then you have a leak.

  • Repeat the test for another 24 hours this time with the pump on.

You'll know for sure if you have a leak, and check out our next blog to find out how to fix it.

How do I clean up a flooded basement?

8/28/2017 (Permalink)

A flooded area that needed immediate services! Central Kentucky call us today, if you're hit with flood or water damage.

One of the most common areas that flood in our homes are our basements. The water seeps in from different places and can ruin many beloved items. Typically, garages are near basements and can run into the same treatment. Water damage requires a professional to make sure you steer clear of possible mold damage. Here are some techniques you can use to make the process easier before we arrive:

  • Use wooden clothespins to hang up clothes, children’s stuffed animals, and photographs that may have been effected.
  • Make sure that furs and leather items dry separately and at room temperature.
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture and wet carpeting.
  • Remove upholstery and cushions for drying.
  • Remove any excess water by mopping or blotting until we arrive.

SERVPRO is ready for any size disaster. If your basement floods, call us at (859) 623-0000.
