Prepare your Business for Fire Damage

9/16/2022 (Permalink)

Do you have a fire plan for your business?

Fires can be damaging to not only your employee's health but to your business. There are a few ways to prepare your employees and customers in case of a fire. Follow these tips:

1. Have Enough Fire Extinguishers

Depending on the size of your office or retail space, you need more than one fire extinguisher. There should be one per floor in a multi-level building at the absolute minimum. Fire extinguishers come in various sizes and should be placed in key areas of your business, such as the kitchen area, central office, and near tools or electrical panels.

2. Be Organization

One way to prevent fire damage is to stay organized. The more dust and clutter, the easier it is for a spark to become a major fire as flames spread over boxes, papers, and other office debris.

3. Conduct Regular Fire Drills

To keep your staff safe, make fire preparation drills a regular event. Plan them during quarterly meetings to keep everyone refreshed on them. It's important for everyone to confidently be able to exit the building from any and all exit points.

4. Maintain Exit Routes Regularly

All exit points must be maintained regularly. Ensure that any automatic fire doors work correctly. Keep exit doors unlocked. Make sure everyone knows where they can exit so routes do not become crowded.

5. Inspect Wiring on a Schedule

Make sure to have routine checks to make sure your wiring is safe. Older buildings can be forgotten over time when people are used to being in them. These are some of the most important ones to check.

What to do when a fire damages your commercial business?

Are you prepared?

When your business suffers from water or fire damage, there are several things that you need to get your business back in working order.

1. Did I File an Insurance Claim?

Make sure to know your insurance agent, so that you can quickly get in contact with them. Before you try to claim damage that occurred from flooding or other types of weather-related events, it is important to ask yourself if you filed an insurance claim and whether you received any compensation. If you have business insurance, check with your agent concerning your options before you file.

2. How Much Can I Claim?

The total amount you can claim will likely depend on past insurance claims and the type of damage your property endured. Schedule a meeting with your insurance agent before an emergency occurs, so that you are up to date on what and how much you can claim for your business.

3. How Long Do I Have To File?

You want to make sure you can file before secondary damages occur. A lot can deter your agent from being able to accept insurance claims, so having your ducks in a row, and efficiently, can be helpful.

Water Damage 101

If you’re reading this, it’s likely that you have experienced water damage at your residence. If so, then you are not alone! In fact, as many as 50% of homeowners in the US suffer some type of property damage caused by water each and every year. At SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties, we understand the importance of this problem and are here to help.

The following will provide an overview of what causes water damage and how our team can help with cleanup after water damage inhabits their property from a flooded basement.

Water damage can be caused by a variety of things, including leaks, burst pipes, floods, and storms.

Water can cause a lot of damage to your home, mainly because of the water’s ability to absorb into walls and insulation. When water stays in contact with wallboard or insulation for several hours, it can destroy the materials used to construct build-outs and interior walls as well as damage electrical systems. Our technicians have the equipment and training to keep moisture away from your belongings as they work quickly to remove all traces of water and dry out your home with high-efficiency dehumidifiers.

When Water Turns Into Mold Damage

8/10/2022 (Permalink)

Water and Mold: Do they go hand in hand?

Spring is typically the beginning of "mold season." Mold can create a pungent, unpleasant odor in parts of your home. Mold typically begins to grow right after winter is finishing up when temperatures slowly rise and rain increases. We all love those spring showers, but this can be a cause of mold sneaking into your home.

Sometimes the water can trickle into parts of your home without you even noticing. The worst time that this occurs is summer because of high temperatures. The water damage that has leaked sits as moisture where mold begins to grow.

When this condensation sits for an extended period of time and when homeowners cool down the inside, the mold takes over. If you do not keep an eye on those places where moisture and condensation pool --mold can cause severe damage.

If you suspect mold in your home, call our offices today. Our team can perform mold testing in your home to find out exactly how much and what kind of mold is in your home. We can make a plan to efficiently clean it.
