Fire Safety Plan

9/17/2020 (Permalink)

graphic with fire Create your fire safety plan today!

Keep your family/ customers/ employees safe in the upcoming months when fires occur the most!

Why should you have a fire safety plan?

When a fire occurs, the first reaction can be to panic! The best reason is have a plan in place is to take the panic out of the situation. If you know exactly what to do and how to handle it --there is a better outcome for the people and place the fire has occurred.

Here are a few tips from the Fire Safety Protection Association on the best way to create that plan for you:

Escape planning tips

  • Pull together everyone in your household and make a plan. Walk through your home and inspect all possible exits and escape routes.  Households with children should consider drawing a floor plan of your home, marking two ways out of each room, including windows and doors. Also, mark the location of each smoke alarm.
  • A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire. Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home. NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm Code® requires interconnected smoke alarms throughout the home. When one sounds, they all sound.
  • When you walk through your plan, check to make sure the escape routes are clear and doors and windows can be opened easily.
  • Choose an outside meeting place (i.e. neighbor's house, a light post, mailbox, or stop sign) a safe distance in front of your home where everyone can meet after they've escaped.
  • Go outside to see if your street number is clearly visible from the road. If not, paint it on the curb or install house numbers to ensure that responding emergency personnel can find your home.
  • Have everyone memorize the emergency phone number of the fire department.
  • If there are infants, older adults, or family members with mobility limitations, make sure that someone is assigned to assist them in the fire drill and in the event of an emergency.

Put your plan to the test

  • Practice your home fire escape plan twice a year, making the drill as realistic as possible.
  • Make arrangements in your plan for anyone in your home who has a disability.
  • Allow children to master fire escape planning and practice before holding a fire drill at night when they are sleeping. The objective is to practice, not to frighten, so telling children.
  • It's important to determine during the drill whether children and others can readily waken to the sound of the smoke alarm. If they fail to awaken, make sure that someone is assigned to wake them up as part of the drill and in a real emergency situation.

If you follow these tips, your chance during a fire is much more likely going to be a positive one. It is always better to have a plan in place, then to not have one and wish you had when an emergency happens. We never think an emergency or disaster will happen until it happens to us! We want you to keep your home or business safe. Follow these tips and keep up to date on current fire safety information from your local fire departments!

smoke on a black background Call us to help today at 859-623-0000.

Do you know the odor that is lurking in your home?

When a fire occurs the smell can linger even after the flames are put out. Did you know that smoke can stick to your walls and upholstery?

Here are some smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke travels to cooler areas and upper levels of a building.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.

The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Two types of Smoke Damage

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Here is some additional information:

  • Wet Smoke: Plastic and Rubber
  1. Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
  • Dry Smoke: Paper and Wood
  1. Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
  2. Protein Fire Residue– Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
  3. Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

When an odor occurs in your home or business, call us today. You can reach us at anytime at 859-623-0000. We are the fire damage restoration experts, and we are here to help!

How do you find leaks?

Your water meter can be located in a basement, garage, or even a spare bathroom at times. Record the number on the water meter, check back after the water meter has been turned off for several minutes and if the number has moved --there's a hidden leak.

You can also call a plumber, if you have a hidden leak and they can locate it for you. Once you have located the hidden leak (by yourself or with the help of a professional), if it is not a quick fix, then it is time to call for a plumber.

What to do if the leak has caused water damage?

Small leaks that have caused even a minor damage in your home can need checked for unseen water damage or possible mold growth.

Our technicians can schedule an appointment to check your home with a moisture meter or mold testing.

Lint Buildup Causes Fire Damage

7/13/2020 (Permalink)

Have you cleaned your dryer lately?

Fire damages occur for a variety of reasons. One of the most common is the dryer. The dryer becomes a handy tool when providing us a quick way to dry our clothes. But, hidden inside is a lint trap that if not cleaned correctly, can cause a lot of damage.

We are providing a few tips to keep your dryer clean and home friendly:

  • Removing lint from filter after every load
  • Cleaning vent pipe once a quarter
  • Scrubbing the lint filter at least twice a year to remove excess buildup

Keeping up with these small practices can keep your dryer safety in tip top shape. Another way to prevent lint fires in your dryer is by keeping an eye out if you dryer times become longer. If they do, it may be time to call in a professional, just to take a look.

Maintenance

Keeping the dryer itself clean is only half the process of fire safety. Regular maintenance involves ensuring that the ventilation system is unhindered and working properly. If any restrictions exist, the dryer will not be able to vent well, and lint will inevitably build up everywhere.

Dryer Safety

Dryers are a huge part of the American home lifestyle. Keep your dryer clean and your home safe by following these tips and keeping maintenance your top priority.

How long have you lived in your home?

5/22/2020 (Permalink)

Now, ask yourself the question --how long did the people before you live in your home?

When it comes to home safety from fire hazards and fire damages, the best way is to check for inadequate or old wiring. Inadequate wiring cause fires to break out in older homes or newer homes, if it was not installed correctly.

Some signs to see if you’ve bad or faulty wiring are:

  • Lights dim if you use another appliance
  • For an appliance to work, you have to disconnect another
  • Fuses blow or trip the circuit frequently.

Have a licensed electrician come and inspect you house, or contact your landlord if you have any of the above occurrences.

SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties know fire damage, but we do not want to see it happen to you and your family. Call us today at 859-623-0000.

Storm Damages Occur in All Shapes and Sizes

5/22/2020 (Permalink)

Storm damages can come in all shapes in sizes: from wind, rain, water, hail, or other damages.

Your home can also suffer when rainfall causes water to flow into your home and flood your property. Houses close to the ongoing construction of buildings, roadways, or other structures can experience sudden and unexpected flooding. Any changes in the ground surrounding your home can send floodwater directly into your property and quickly overtake your house.

Floodwater that travels overland might not contain as many microbes as water from a stream or lake, but we still consider this water as highly contaminated. Mitigation of flooding from outside sources must address the contamination deposited in the house.

Floors require special care and mitigation so their damage remains manageable, and this requires the removal of many types of flooring and fast drying out of the underlying structure. Replacing ruined carpet or other flooring types can only happen once we complete the task of drying the floor.

Removal of lower sections of the wall makes it possible to air out the entire home from the influx of water. Throughout your property, we use moisture meters to ensure complete and consistent drying occurs. When we are complete we will make your storm damages, "Like it never even happened."

Smoke Alarm Tips

No one can know when a fire or smoke damage can surprise you in your home or business. The best way to protect your home, family, or employees is to have a smoke alarm that is ready at all times.

Not only do you need to keep the batteries updated in a smoke alarm, but to have am emergency plan in place. Smoke alarms work best when paired with a fire escape plan. A plan allows your family, employees or client to escape quickly and safely in an emergency situation.

Review the following tips regarding smoke detector installation and maintenance:

  • Install smoke alarms on every level of the home including the basement.
  • Smoke alarms should be installed away from the kitchen to prevent false alarms. Generally, they should be at least 10 feet from a cooking appliance.
  • Test smoke alarms at least once a month using a test button.
  • Replace batteries in all smoke alarms at least once a year. If an alarm "chirps" the battery is low and should be replaced right away.

After the Storm: Mold Damage

4/23/2020 (Permalink)

When the water has cleared...

Mold growth occurs faster than one might think in your home. Mold can grow in as few as 24 hours after a flood. At the most, you have 48 hours before it begins to wreak havoc to your home's structure or belongings impacted by flood waters. We suggest calling a professional to help deal with any mold suspicion. We can provide mold testing, which helps get to the problem more quickly and efficiently.

Many cleanup crews operate 24/7, so you can get help immediately. Don’t delay; the more time mold has to grow, the worse the problem can get.

It's Important To Clean Your Belongings

As you may know, mold can affect any floor or wall that's sat with standing water. However, it can also affect your belongings. Be sure to thoroughly clean anything that was in the room with the mold.

If you find a mold problem on a couch or other porous surface, you may need to throw the whole item in the garbage. This is especially true if you had black water in your home, as it contains harmful bacteria. Do not leave these items on a curb for others to take the mold into their homes. It is best to dispose of these items safely and securely at a universal dump or other areas in your town or state.

If you need mold testing or a mold cleanup, call our offices today at SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties.

What could it look like when your home has fire damage?

4/21/2020 (Permalink)

You just had a fire in your home.  Are you running out of time to salvage important items? Below is a timeline of how quickly certain types of items must have the restoration process started.

The IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification), a globally recognized leader in all types of remediation, identifies these time windows:

  • Within minutes
Porous materials and synthetics must be immediately addressed to prevent permanent discoloration.

Porous Materials Any material that has a void of space within its makeup can be considered porous. This void is a hole in the space otherwise taken up by the main structure of atoms that make up the rest of the material. A good example would be a sponge!

  • Within hours to days
Wooden furniture, flooring, painted walls, and clothing can become permanently stained if not addressed within hours to days of damage, and metal surfaces will at this point begin to rust, pit, and corrode, requiring refinishing or replacement.
  • Within weeks
Prolonged soot exposure will embed itself in the fibers and surfaces, resulting in a longer, more costly restoration with a higher likelihood of replacement.

Act fast to prevent the disastrous effects of smoke damage in your home. Contact SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties today at (859) 623-0000!

Water can Hide Anywhere: Crawl Space Water Damage

4/20/2020 (Permalink)

Wet Crawl Space Water Damage

Crawl spaces are often forgotten when it comes to water damage. If your home has a crawl space, an area that has limited height and is typically used for electrical wiring, this space is often fall victim to water damage. Crawl spaces can have moisture, standing water, or staining within the crawl space, which will alert you to the water damage within.

If this crawl space is underneath your floors, this is caused by water that has seeped into the foundation of the home. If this crawl space is in your attic, that means you likely have a leak in your roof somewhere.

Often times, your crawl space can flood from ground water and not enter your home if it's a small amount. It's always a good idea to check your crawl space periodically if there's been an uptake in rain and flooding in your area.

If your crawl space does get water damage, call your local SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties today.

4 To Do’s When filling a Water Damage Claim

4/8/2020 (Permalink)

Here are a few tips on what to do when you are filing a water damage claim. It is always good to take extra steps when protecting your home and your family.

Prevent Additional Damage and Secure Valuables:

You have informed your insurance company of the disaster, now prevent additional damage to your property!  You may be advised to board up any broken doors or windows, tarp holes in your roof, turn off the water supply, remove excess water, etc. Also, remember to take your surviving valuables to a safe dry location to keep them in good condition.

Review your insurance policy:

Does homeowners insurance cover water damage? So many factors to look at, so you need to find out exactly what your own insurance policy covers. You may or may not have coverage for:

  • Floods
  • Sewer or drain backup
  • Accidental water damage from a heating or air conditioning system
  • Mold remediation
  • Restoration of water-damaged furnishings, electronics, and personal items

Review your existing policy carefully so that you can understand all the provisions and talk to your agent!

Record Proof of Water Damage

Take pictures and videos of your damaged property and preserve any broken parts that may have caused or allowed water damage to take place – this way, you will have indisputable evidence for your insurance claims. Have in mind that nothing should be thrown away and the scene should not be altered (as much as possible) until an adjuster comes to inspect the property.

Make a Detailed inventory about any Damaged Possessions

To get reimbursement for your damaged items, you will need a detailed inventory list stating the make and model number of every piece, its age and current condition, as well as the replacement cost and the actual cash value of individual items. Creating such a comprehensive inventory sheet is quite difficult and time-consuming, but is critical if you want to be paid for water-damaged contents.

If you have a water damage, call SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties today. We are here to help you.

What NOT to Do When Filing Insurance Claim for Water Damage

4/8/2020 (Permalink)

We showed you in a recent post what to do when filing a water damage insurance claim, but here are a few tips on what NOT to do when filing a water damage insurance claim. Keep your home and family safe with these tips.

Throw Anything Away

DO NOT THROW ANYTHING AWAY you will need evidence for your water damage claims. If your policy states that the damaged property should be available for inspection at any time throughout the claim, so you should not throw away any damaged items until the insurance company has authorized this in writing. If you dispose of your “evidence” too early, you risk having these items denied coverage or not paid for.

You are also advised to keep any receipts, credit card statements, and bank statements concerning your property as they can also help you support your claim and prove the values of your damaged items.

Make Permanent Repairs before You Have Approval from the Insurance Company

Your insurance company will want to inspect your property in order to determine what repairs will be required and how much they are going to cost. If you start reconstruction works before the insurance company has approved them, you may not be paid for the repairs. Large insurance claims always take long to settle and involve a lot of negotiations, so you must be patient and prepared to wait until you are certain that the restoration costs will be duly covered.

Keep these tips in mind when you have a water damage --call us at SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties help clean up the water damage in your flooded home.

How To Handle a Flooded Basement

3/31/2020 (Permalink)

One of the most dreaded things to happen when you turn on your light switch to head down the stairs to your basement is seeing water rising from the floor and headed up the walls.

Whether your flooded basement is the result of torrential rain, a broken dam, or melting winter snows, the result is almost always the same: unwanted standing water.

There are ways to get rid of the water that are better than others. These three tips will help keep your home safe even after the water has been cleaned up. Check these out below:

1. Switch Off the Utilities

Make sure the electricity is turned off. Power usage and water can make for an unsafe situation. If you can't find out where to turn your water off in your home, call your local utility company to help out.

2. Locate a Professional Team- like SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties

Many people panic when they find their basement floor flooded with water, which is completely understandable. The loss of stored items, children’s bedrooms, or an extra living area with all the additional items is not desired when filled with water. Calling a local company to clean up your water ensures that it's done the right way the first time.  We can get there faster and create a plan to create a better situation for the water to damage less of your property.

3. Remove the Standing Water

The first thing the water damage team will typically do is remove the standing water and investigate for signs of structural damage. Water removal is important because standing water can:

  • Encourage mold growth
  • Cause foundation damage
  • Ruin walls and insulation

Once the water is gone, the team can begin cleaning and disinfecting the area, and, if needed, technicians can generally begin rebuilding the damaged areas.

Call your local SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties today. We are here to help 24/7 with your emergency water damages.

Another day, another quarantine project: Before the Storm, Prepare Your Yard

3/24/2020 (Permalink)

Before the Storm, Prepare your Yard

During these uncertain days, it is always best to keep busy. There are several different projects you can take part of to pass the time and improve your home.

Before the spring storms start brewing, here are a few tips to look into to improve your yard and help lessen the chances of getting water or storm damage in your yard.

1. Roof and Gutter Changes

One of the easiest fixes for excess water pooling around the home involves proper roof and gutter maintenance. If shingles are in disrepair or the gutters are clogged, this can prevent water from flowing cleanly off the roof and through the downspout during a rain storm. This means that rain can spill directly down near the house and seep into the foundation, basement, and crawlspace. The best way to help keep your yard safe is to do maintenance checks on these spots in your yard.

2. Soil Control

If you notice outside flooding or any type of pooling, purchase additional topsoil or gravel to change the grade of your yard at that location by simply filling in the hole. If the water flow is excessive, it may be beneficial to dig a shallow drainage canal instead, bordered by slightly raised land on either side.

3. Surface Materials

Consider different ground materials over others depending on the protection you want in your yard.. If you have clay or silt soil, you may have noticed that running water tends to erode channels in your yard and prevent grass from growing in some locations.

Many outside flooding issues can be resolved with minor alterations to existing lawn and garden practices. Observe how water tends to flow through your property and make corresponding landscaping adjustments.

In addition, should your yard issues create a water damage in your basement or garage --call your local SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties today.

What comes after the storm?

3/19/2020 (Permalink)

After the Storm

When a storm hits your town or your home/business, the storm damage is the first concern. It makes sense to worry in the beginning about torn roofs, debris damage, water mitigation, and more.

When the storm is over, there are other concerns that deserve to be met: mold damage.

Water can leave mold damage after only 72 hours of being left. Sometimes in storm situations, water is not found until three or more days. Mold has already set-in at that point. When considering mold, here are a few different odors that can point you in the direction of where, why, and how:

1. Dry the Flooded Area

Any standing water will need to be removed via sump pump first. For the remaining dampness, professionals will bring in heavy-duty floor fans to promote air circulation. Dehumidifiers can also help with removing moisture from the air.

2. Take Note of Lingering Odors

We remove some carpets, drywall, and flooring that are too damaged to remediated. This should help with getting rid of some of the odor, but you need to pay attention after the crew leaves because certain smells may remain. We can provide ozone machines (if you can be out of the house) and other odor fighting remedies. In the event nothing else works, you should contact SERVPRO of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties to test for mold in certain areas of your home/business.

3. Overall Air Quality

Indoor air quality is critical to people’s well-being. You should replace furnace and air filters once every three months. It may also be good to acquire a high-efficiency particulate air filter to remove substances that entered the air through flood water. Mold growth can lead to serious health complications, so if people in your commercial building smell something, it is important to act.

It's always smart to have a professional come in to look at an odor that will not quite go away. Call us at 859-623-0000 to do mold testing for your home or business with odor issues.

Having trouble with a drafty house this winter?

Heating costs can throw a wrench into your winter budget. But you can limit the losses by addressing the gaps, cracks and waste that drive up fuel costs.

Follow these 5 tips to help get your winter budget back on track:

  1. Install weatherstripping--Seal a drafty door by installing foam or felt weatherstripping inside the door frame.
  2. Install a door sweep--A sweep is a flexible piece of rubber or plastic that's held to the door's lower edge by a strip of aluminum.
  3. Seal attic air leaks--Pull back attic insulation to find and seal cutouts in drywall for electrical fixtures, pipes, fans and outlets
  4. Use your window coverings: shades and drapes can conserve heat at night.

If you want to take it a step further, add attic insulation.

And replace your furnace filters monthly.

And, lastly --Grab a tube of caulk, a can of spray foam gap-sealer, a pencil and notepad, so you can plug those household leaks on your own.

We hope you have considered these five tips to help make your home more winter friendly.

Remember, if you need help this winter season with reconstruction needs our team has you covered. We offer financing to help you with your home remodels and construction needs.

Frozen Pipes Season is Here: Tips to Prevent

1/9/2020 (Permalink)

a house in the winter time with words and an orange logo house Let SERVPRO help you this winter!

Frozen pipes season is upon us. The weather is turning bitter and it's time to protect your home from damages.

Why are frozen pipes such a big deal? As the water that is left in your pipes freeze the water expands, which will thaw once the temperature reaches above freezing again. The buildup of the water can cause pipes to crack and break, damaging your home with a water damage.

There are simple and inexpensive ways to prevent this from happening.

Check out these tips to keep your home free from water damage this winter season:

1. Keep the heat on (use precaution when using space heaters, but they help to prevent pipes from freezing)

2.Apply heating tape

3. Add extra insulation to your pipes

4. Keep your cabinets open with pipes exposed underneath

5. Allow the faucet to drip, because running water relieves pressure in the system.

If pipes freeze and burst, it can cause a lot of water damage to the property and to their possessions. If you have water damage from burst pipes, call us today. We are here to help residents of Richmond, Irvine, Stanton, Waco, Berea, and many more areas surrounding Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties.

Clogged Toilet Water Damage

10/30/2019 (Permalink)

a toilet paper roll inside of a house with a servpro logo beside it Don't let a clogged toilet get you down. Call us today!

The worst thing that can happen after a long day of work is to go home to a clogged toilet. After using the bathroom, you notice the water in the toilet is not draining like it's supposed too.

If your toilet is overflowing, there are several steps you can take to stop the flooding and find the source of the problem.

If the toilet begins to overflow immediately after a flush, it’s likely that the toilet itself is clogged. First, stop the flow of water into the toilet to minimize flood damage. Remove the tank lid and press down on the flapper valve. This will prevent any more water from getting into the bowl. You want to make sure the water does not go over the sides. Once you’ve secured the flapper valve, lift the float that operates the tank fill valve to stop the tank from filling. Hold these in place for about a minute to cut off the toilet bowl water supply and allow the water level to return to normal.

If the water doesn’t start to go down, turn off the water valve behind the base of the toilet by turning it clockwise.

The next step--

Use a plunger to try to remove the blockage.

If plunging and clearing the drain doesn’t stop the overflowing problem, you’ll have to take a look inside the toilet tank. If your toilet overflows even without flushing, it’s possible that the clog is somewhere else in a drainpipe, possibly your main drain or sewer line.

In this situation, running water from any other source in the house can’t escape and backflows to the lowest exit in the system--your toilet. If you have a private septic system, it’s possible that the septic tank is full.

SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties do not clear out septic tanks, but we do aide in the process of cleaning bathrooms and other areas inside the home that were impacted by the overflow.

Water Safety at Home

8/7/2019 (Permalink)

We are no strangers to water in our line of business, but water can do more damage than just ruining the carpet in your home. We always give you tips on how to prevent water damage or how to work around water damage, but what should you do when the water is there on purpose and you have little ones around?

Water safety is a staple for summers around pools, lakes, and the ocean for families with little ones. Here are some water safety tips for at home to practice with your family:

  1. Never leave your child unattended around water. Babies can drown in as little as one inch of water.
  2. Watch kids when they are in or around water, without being distracted. Keep young children within arm’s reach of an adult.
  3. Once bath time is over, immediately drain the tub.
  4. Empty buckets, containers and kiddie pools immediately after use. Store them upside down so they don't collect water.
  5. Close toilet lids and use toilet seat locks to prevent drowning.
  6. Keep doors to bathrooms and laundry rooms closed and even consider locks.

When it comes to swimming there are even more in-depth tips to follow:

  1. Watch kids when they are in or around water, without being distracted. Keep young children within arm’s reach of an adult. Make sure older children swim with a partner every time.
  2. When children are swimming and there are several adults present, make sure kids are actively supervised at all times by choosing a Water Watcher.
  3. Install fences around home pools. A pool fence should surround all sides of the pool and be at least four feet tall with self-closing and self-latching gates.
  4. Teach children how to swim. Every child is different, so enroll children in swim lessons when they are ready. Consider their age, development and how often they are around water.
  5. Make sure kids learn how to swim and have water skills.

Learn CPR. It's as simple as that to help someone in need around a water emergency.

Keep these tips in mind the next time your family has a pool day or even when it's just bath time.

6/27/2019 (Permalink)

Storms create water damage that is sometimes unseen or never cleaned correctly.

When flood damages occur from storms, majority of the time that is not included on insurance. When customers do not have insurance sometimes that do not get the water cleaned up correctly. When water is not cleaned up correctly, the mold damage begins to grow. When mold begins to grow, it can hide in places that are not seen by the naked eye or even seen but smelt.

Water Damage Intrusion During a Storm

5/27/2019 (Permalink)

Did you know that there are two types of water damage?

Water damage does not only enter your home through one area. Water can enter your home through two different ways --the top and the bottom.

One of the ways that water can come in from the top is through your roof shingles not being secure or from stopped up gutters. This is why so many home specialists recommend cleaning your gutters out.

From the bottom of your property, groundwater can enter through garages and basements, and usually is not covered by your insurance. This kind of damage is a result of the flood or storm water and needs to be cleaned up, even if it is not covered. SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties offers financing for this reason.

Water damage needs to be cleaned up as soon as it is discovered. Once mold damage begins to spread the spores can be transferred when being dried with home fans and wet vacs.

Richmond, Berea, Mt. Vernon, McKee, Stanford, and Waco --call SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties. Your local water remediation specialists can get to you sooner to help stop the spread of mold and get that water damage cleaned up.

Commercial damages are one of the emergencies that SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties takes on almost monthly.

From office cleaning to HVAC unit cleaning to water damage cleanup --we have done it all.

Most recently we have done a commercial mold cleaning for a structure in Berea, Kentucky. It was a large business that discovered mold on their walls and products. We had to set up an area of containment around the walls, which was sealed off to clean. We make sure none of the spores settle on other areas in the building or products. We cleaned off the mold and used our special products to make sure it was efficiently and effectively cleaned.

The owner and corporate offices of the building were extremely pleased with the job. Not only have we completed spring mold cleaning for this office, but for other buildings in the area as well. No one is exempt from mold growth, the best thing to do is call a professional at the first sign so the cost is lower and the change of it spreading are lower as well.

We offer mold testing as soon as we get on site, so we will know what kind of mold and how to clean the mold in the best way for your business or home. We do several mold testings for homes especially older homes that have settled.

Call today to get setup with a mold testing.

Fire Safety --It's Time to Check on Your Wiring

5/22/2019 (Permalink)

How long have you lived in your home?

Cooking Equipment Fire Damage

5/22/2019 (Permalink)

Do NOT leave pots and pan unattended when you are cooking on a stove.

Have you ever walked away from something cooking on the stove?

We are here to tell you, PLEASE, do not do that.

When cooking on a stove there are a variety of factors that can go wrong. We do not realize how distracted we can get with day to day tasks, children, pets, spouses, that we walk away from a pot or pan that is actively cooking.

Pots and pans can overheat and cause a fire  if the person cooking gets distracted and leaves cooking unattended. Always stay in the room, or ask someone to watch your food, or just turn it off.

If you think you are going to be distracted when you are cooking, just do not cook. Wait until later, when you have more time and you will not be distracted by life's other tasks.

This is a common occurrence we see here at SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties. We want you to keep your home and family safe.

Water Damage in Your Home: How much is that going to cost?

5/17/2019 (Permalink)

Water Damage Expenses

Water damage becomes more expensive the longer it sits in your home. Water damage that has been extracted immediately is usually much smaller on the expense scale. Here are a few situations that can make water damage more expensive:

  • letting water damage sit longer than 24 hours
  • not calling a professional company to clean up the water and cleaning it up yourself
  • not drying out the walls that have been impacted causing mold damage later on
  • contents damage
  • structural damage
  • flooring damage for water damages in a high class, such as 2 or 3, that have to be replaced.

Any of those scenarios listed above can cause water damage to be more expensive in your home or business. We want to keep costs low for you and your insurance company --call the professionals today to keep you from ending up on the list of the more expensive side of water damage cleanup.

Is it time for a new Water Heater?

5/8/2019 (Permalink)

A water break can happen in a variety of ways in your home. A sump pump can fail, flooding can occur, but one of the most common is an old water heater.

Water heaters are not meant to last a lifetime in a home. The corrosion will build up and damage the tank, which leads to leaking and water damage in your home. The best way to avoid having that water damage emergency is to set a replacement date before the first signs of trouble occur in your water heater.

Many people do not know this, but water heaters should be inspected after ten years in use. Some customers even chose to replace their's sooner as to stay away from unforeseen damages.

Water damage happens from time to time, but taking steps to stop them from occurring can make them less-likely in your home.

Spring is Here --Check Your Home

5/7/2019 (Permalink)

Springtime means Sump Pump Time

There are many ways that your home can fail you this spring when it comes to water damage.

One of those is: sump pump failure.

When your home is prone to flooding from time to time you are at risk and should get a sump pump installed. Most of the time these are highly efficient ways to stop water from accumulating before it can cause a lot of damage.

In order to make sure your sump pump has not failed make sure you have it installed correctly, that it is plugged in, and powered. When checking the sump pump this spring make sure there are no stray debris to stop it from working properly.

On another note, homeowners who have a washer in the basement should install a sump pump for any accidents or mechanical failures that may occur with the washing machine.

Sump pumps are great ways to stop water from damaging your home this spring. Be on the lookout for more tips to keep your home water resistant this spring.

What to do after a Storm?

4/30/2019 (Permalink)

After a storm occurs, it is time to assess the damages. It is not always fun to venture outside after the storm and see what the storm left in its wake, but the longer you wait to assess the damages the more costly they can become for you.

When storm damage occurs it can cause lightening, flood, hail, or wind damages.

The best process to take is to write down all of the damages that occurred and to take photos for your insurance company.

You want to make sure that you have before photos for some of the areas that had destruction, so the insurance company can compare the damages.

Storm damage can happen to anyone, as storms are unpredictable by nature, and pop up without notice at times. Make sure to have a plan and a list of assets so that if a storm damage does occur, and it's covered by insurance, you will be able to get your home back in order in no time.

Spring Storms

4/11/2019 (Permalink)

Call us at SERVPRO today if you home or business has been impacted with water damage from spring storms and flooding.

They are coming.

We all look forward to when those winter days fade away and spring is in the air. The only downside to the snow melting away are the spring storms. The flowers in bloom bring thunder and rain too.

The spring storms are getting closer, so the best way to prepare ourselves is with a list.

Let's get your home prepared for this spring weather.

  1.  Prepare your roof

Lightening, high winds, hail, and heavy rain can tear off shingles or drive moisture beneath them, causing further damage. Make sure shingles are securely in place and consider putting a tarp down on any areas that need extra attention during a spring storm.

     2. Gutters

Ice dams can cause build up in gutters during the winter months. To ensure that gutters are working properly make sure to reinstall or check up on gutter repair work before the spring storms begin in your area.

     3. Siding

There are variety of ways that siding can become cracked or damaged during winter months. You want to double check all of the siding on your home. If moisture gets in from damaged siding, you could bet in for wood rot, mold, or water damage when the spring rains hit.

     4.  Trees

Many homes have trees in their yards and do not even think about them once winter has passed. High wings, rain, lightening, and hail can all cause trees to split and fall on your home or garage. When a tree falls it does not just damage the outside of your home, but the inside as well. A fallen tree can bring in debris, water damage, and mold damage into your home. Make sure to trim trees back before the spring storms hit to keep the limbs from falling on your home.

Just keep these tips in mind when it comes to renovating your home this spring season. We want you to enjoy these spring months, and with peace of mind that your home is in top shape.

Fire Damage Document Restoration

4/10/2019 (Permalink)

Fire damages do not just occur in homes. According to Encore Fire Protection, fires are more likely to occur on days when people are not in the office. Fire damages occur mainly when people have certain appliances and equipment in use.

You want to be prepared for when a fire damage occurs in your business. What do you do next?

SERVPRO has a document restoration division.

When your office has important documents or even money that needs restored, we are here to help.

We have entire teams that can help dry, clean, and disinfect your documents, money, or books.

We even have a program that can digitize your documents. We restore what was old and make it new. Do not let fire damage ruin your business. We want it back open "Like it never even happened."

Do not let your Dryer Vent Ruin your Home

4/10/2019 (Permalink)

Make a List

One of the most common causes of fire damage is a dirty dryer vent. It's hidden away, so sometimes it is hard to think about it. The problem is that dryer vents are not the only issue. When securing your home against water or fire damage one of the best solutions you can do is to make a list.

Create a list of all of the possible damages that can occur from water or fire mishaps that are preventable.

Put that list somewhere that everyone in the family can see it. Put someone in charge of marking that list off and checking it twice.

Always decide if something needs to be checked weekly, monthly, yearly, and even daily when necessary. You do not want to miss a vital part of house care that could prevent major damages from occurring to your home and family.

Dryer vents are just one of the major issues, but check other parts of your home too. Dryer vents may not seem like a huge issue, but when not cleaned properly and timely they can cause irreversible damages.

Spring has Sprung, and so has Mold

4/10/2019 (Permalink)

The mold problem

Mold damage can occur in almost any home or business given the right temperatures, environments, and moisture levels.

Mold can grow anywhere from 24 to 48 hours after a water damage or moisture occurrence. Mold does not care how clean or new your home is, it still finds  a way into your life.

Mold damage is not something to take lightly as it can cause other side effects for your family. Mold damage needs to be cleaned up and tested for severity and type.

We offer mold testing through our office to begin the process of taking care of your mold damages. We have mold testing kits that test a minimum of three areas to send to the lab.

Once we get a mold kit back from the lab our production team will discuss with you the type and severity of your mold damage.

Once we speak with you we will begin the process of cleaning.

Call us today to set up an appointment with our mold cleaning technicians.

Water Resistant Flooring

4/4/2019 (Permalink)

After a water damage, most homeowners want a new flooring that "resists" water in the best possible way. No on wants more water damage after their first one has occurred.

There is a product called, water core laminate hardwood that is a great start for new flooring. Even if you are not a fan of laminate, this looks realistic and is water "resistant.”

Most of the time, depending on the class of water, changing the flooring of a home after a water damage is prevalent. There's a variety to choose from when it comes to new flooring. This is a great option for kitchens and basements.

This flooring will not hold up for flooding, but is still a good flooring product to have for spills and small leaks that may happen, or moisture in a basement.

Mold Grows Everywhere, but Especially in this Room

2/12/2019 (Permalink)

We know that mold can grow almost anywhere and everywhere. There is one particular room in your home (and everyone's home) that is more likely to grow mold: the bathroom.

The bathroom grows mold quickly because of the heavy amounts of moisture not only in the air, but only floor, on items, and in your sink, shower, and toilet. Let's break down some tasks you can do to prevent the mold breakout from happening in your bathroom:

  • Spread towels out after use so that they dry quickly
  • Minimize containers left in the shower
  • Wipe down the shower with a clean towel after its last daily use
  • Pick out shower curtain that do not easily mold or are materials that do not retain water

Keep these tips in mind for making sure your bathroom is mold free. SERVPRO of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard and Lincoln Counties offers mold testing. Call us today for more information.

Water Damage during Winter Time Equals Frozen Pipes

1/21/2019 (Permalink)

The winter season is here and it brings all the bad weather with it. Unfortunately, another aspect of cold weather is frozen pipes.

Frozen pipes can cause more damage in your home than you think. Here are a few tips to get your home ready for frozen pipes this winter:

1. Check sprinkler and irrigation system and make sure everything is turned off.

2. Identify your home's freezing points. Check for areas such as crawl spaces, unheated rooms, basements, garages, and exterior walls that would be more prone to freezing.

3. Know how to shut off your water: Locate the main water shut-off and hang a tag from it.

4. Strengthen your home by eliminating sources of cold air near water lines.

5. Protect your pipes: when pipes are exposed make sure to wrap them with insulation or heat tape (even fabric, towels, or newspaper can help)!

When frozen pipes warm up and leave a mess in your home, call the heroes today SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties at 859-623-0000.

We have many different tools and equipment to handle each individual job.

In the photo, our owner is demonstrating how this tool works to our marketing representative.

The first thing to determine what's causing the damage is to figure out what's leaking.

Then we look for visual signs like swollen base boards. After that we then bring in the equipment to confirm the affected areas.

Once the estimate and approvals are given, we then begin work to fix the damage from getting worse.

Affected areas are dried out. If that fixes the issue our job is complete, otherwise our team will remove materials damaged beyond repair.

My pool is leaking --now what?

5/21/2018 (Permalink)

In our last blog, we mentioned ways to find out if you have a pool leak. If you read our former blog post and think that you may have a pool with a leak --then keep reading.

There are possible ways to help fix your pool --if it has a vinyl liner. (We recommend only trying these tips if you feel confident in your handy man abilities.)

Step 1: Never entirely drain a pool with a vinyl liner, as it could lead to drying and cracking later.

Step 2: See if your pool comes with a vinyl repair kit.

Step 3: Cut out the patch in a circle, and be sure to make it larger than the leaky spot.

Step 4: Cover the back of the circular patch with glue.

  • If you are not under water, apply the patch over the leak hole and apply pressure for 2 minutes.
  • If you leak is under water, fold the patch in half so that the glue will come in little contact with water. Apply pressure to the patch for 5 minutes.

Just keep swimming!

Is the pool leaking?

5/14/2018 (Permalink)

It's time for splashing with your favorite pool toy, lathering on the sunscreen, and putting on your favorite sunglasses to head to the pool.

We want your pool season to be fun and worry free. One thing that can put a damper on your pool season is a leaky pool. No one wants a damaged pool to ruin their summer fun.

We have tips on how to fix and find a leak that may have sprung up in your pool this summer:

  1. Place a 5-galloon bucket on the second step of your pool and use a marker to match the water level of your pool.
  2. Turn off any pump or other device in the pool.
  3. Wait about 24 hours and then return to check the status. If they both have gone down to the same level then you just have evaporation.

But, if the pool level has gone down but the bucket has not, then you have a leak.

  • Repeat the test for another 24 hours this time with the pump on.

You'll know for sure if you have a leak, and check out our next blog to find out how to fix it.

Don't do it --Bleach is not made for Mold!

5/11/2018 (Permalink)

Here is a photo of mold damage that we came upon at a residential job last year. Our certified technicians are trained to clean up mold damage.

Mold damage can happen at any time, but especially this time of year. The weather is warming up and mold spores are coming out to play. Many people want to automatically turn to bleach to try and clean up the mold by themselves. There are many reasons not to try to clean-up mold by yourself. It's always best to call a professional, so you don't spread the mold spores.

Here are a few reasons that bleach is not a good option for your next mold damage cleanup:

  1. Bleach is toxic.
  2. Bleach loses effectiveness overtime.
  3. Bleach does not kill mold on porous surfaces and can actually contribute to mold growth.

Don't clean up the mold yourselves, call your local SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties.

Does Insurance Cover That?

5/9/2018 (Permalink)

As summer season approaches it's always a good idea to review your insurance. Insurance is great --it keeps you calm during your storm. But, your insurance may not cover as much as you think.

Your agents want to help you, try to keep in contact with them on what to do when disaster strikes. It's never a bad idea to review your contract and discuss the ins and out of what is covered. Another good idea, is to check your deductible. How much will you need to pay out of pocket before it reaches the level that your insurance can help you? Summer Storm Safety

5/4/2018 (Permalink)

Everyone looks forward to the summer this time of the year. We are ready to let winter go, and welcome summer with open arms ;however, this is also the most dangerous time of the year for storms.

There are a few different ways to stay safe during summer activities:

  • Never stand near taller objects such as a tree, or utility pole.
  • Immediately leave any bodies of water like ponds, lakes, swimming pools.
  • Always stay away from objects that conduct any type of electricity.
  • Never lie flat on the ground.

It's always best to plan your summer days according to the weather. Always keep a close watch on the weather channel and your local news to make sure storms are not headed your way.

Houston, Texas and the surrounding areas were hit with a category 4 Hurricane earlier this week. Marketing Manager Ashley Kovaleski and Marketing Coordinator Kelsey White in front of SERVPRO® of Birmingham!

On August 28th, one of our owners –Julie Roberts, and part of our marketing team --Ashley Kovaleski and Kelsey White went to SERVPRO of Birmingham, Alabama. The girls traveled over seven hours to reach one of the most historic SERVPRO’s in the U.S.

SERVPRO® of Birmingham began 33 years ago with nothing more than a green clean dream!  David Wilson and his team started their SERVPRO from the ground up in Tallahassee, and are still serving Alabama today! While the girls were at SERVPRO® of Birmingham, they trained with some of the top professionals in their field.

While at SERVPRO® of Birmingham, they even got to meet the first SERVPRO Marketing Representative, Stan Richardson, who started with this team from the beginning. He told them about his first commercial job, and how it changed the industry as we know it. A local grocery store had caught fire and while they had never done a commercial property before they took the opportunity to help in their community. They got the job completed in ten days, and thus began the commercial side of SERVPRO.

The SERVPRO experience is unique to say the least, but being around a group of professionals who have the same passion about helping others through disaster is one that cannot be replicated. No matter what state you’re in, SERVPRO strives to make your disasters “Like it never even happened.”

How do I clean up a flooded basement?

8/28/2017 (Permalink)

A flooded area that needed immediate services! Central Kentucky call us today, if you're hit with flood or water damage.

  • Use wooden clothespins to hang up clothes, children’s stuffed animals, and photographs that may have been effected.
  • Make sure that furs and leather items dry separately and at room temperature.
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture and wet carpeting.
  • Remove upholstery and cushions for drying.
  • Remove any excess water by mopping or blotting until we arrive.

SERVPRO is ready for any size disaster. If your basement floods, call us at (859) 623-0000.

6/20/2017 (Permalink)

Don't let "The Mold Monster" take over your home!

Everyone dreads when they look in their basement, under the kitchen sink, or around wet boxes in the garage and see that yellow, green, black, or orange substance. The sinking feeling hits – “I’ve got a mold problem.” While not all mold is bad, some mold can cause health concerns for many people. Any kind of water flooding in your home or business can cause mold to grow --anything from water leaks to varying humidity. The best way to get ahead of the “Mold Monster” is to take precautions. Here are some different signs that your home or business is being over-run by the “Mold Monster” himself:

-You can visibly see the mold
-Musty odor –indicates mold is present
-Any type of moisture problems that may have -caused mold growth
-Excessive humidity

If you think you have a mold problem, and the “Mold Monster” has taken up residence in your home or business, please call SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties at (859) 623-0000. We are always Here to Help!

Having the right equipment during a fire can save your home –and your life!

6/16/2017 (Permalink)

P.A.S.S. graphic for fire safety before the fire damage occurs.

Fires and fire damage are common tragedies among homeowners. But, there are ways to lessen the damage. SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties is Here to Help so fires don’t ruin your summer. One is having a proper fire extinguisher --especially, during grilling season. Make sure you follow these rules from our friends at the American Red Cross when it comes to having a good extinguisher:

  • Always have more than one working extinguisher in your home.
  • Install extinguishers high on the wall and away from any heat sources.
  • If an extinguisher doesn’t work on a fire immediately, drop it and get out. Most portable extinguishers empty in 8 seconds.
  • Make sure the gauge on your extinguisher is properly charged.

Once you have the right fire extinguisher, always remember PASS:

P- Pull the pin and hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you.

A- Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire.

S- Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly

S- Sweep the nozzle from side to side.

We hope these tips keep fires and fire damage from your homes. But, if you have fire damage and need SERVPRO, we are always Here to Help. Call SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties at (859) 623-0000.

It’s not time to change the clocks back, but it is time to change your smoke alarms!

6/16/2017 (Permalink)

It's always that time of year to check your smoke alarms to keep your family safe from a fire and your home from fire damage!

Smoke alarms can improve the safety of your home a significant amount when it comes to fires. A fire can happen at any time, and you will want to make sure you and your family are safe. Here are a few tips from the American Red Cross on how to update your smoke alarms to keep your family and home safe before a fire ignites:

  • Have a smoke alarm on every level of your home and in every bedroom.
  • Keep smoke alarms away from windows, doors, walls, or ducts that can stop your alarms from working properly.
  • Check your smoke alarm monthly.
  • Replace smoke alarm batteries every year, or more if needed.

Keeping your family safe is the main priority to having a properly working smoke alarm; but fires can also cause hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars’ worth of damage every year. There is soot, smoke, and even water damage when it comes to a bad fire. The faster you know there is a fire, the faster you can get it put out. Visit: www.redcross.org to learn more tips on how to keep your home safe in case of a fire.

Whether it’s Mold remediation or Golf --SERVPRO is ready!

5/26/2017 (Permalink)

Marketing Rep Chanel Music getting ready for a day of fun in the sun with the SEK Golf.

Marketing Rep Chanel Music and Marketing Coordinator Kelsey White traveled up the mountain to the South-Eastern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Golf Scramble last week to represent SERVPRO. They met with many city council members along with business owners throughout the day. The day was fun and hot, but they did have time to talk all things mold. The participants expressed their concern for mold damage in their area. Because they know, when water damage sits for too long, mold begins to take hold. The mold spores rapidly reproduce when moisture is present. For residents that can be dangerous, and for business owners, it can cause legal issues. Mold litigation is becoming a reoccurring case in the legal systems. Commercial property or personal property should be well-taken care of in case of water damage where mold can grow. One of the most common questions we receive is: Do we test for mold? The short answer is, no; however, we do refer industrial hygienists who can test for mold.

Here’s what to do if you find mold:

  • Stay out of affected area.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO® Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties for remediation services.

What not to do if you find mold:

  • Don’t touch or disturb the mold.
  • Don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.
  • Don’t attempt to dry the area yourself.
  • Don’t spray bleach or other disinfectants on the mold.

Here in the bluegrass state we have weather patterns that can go all over the place. Business owners, homeowners, and city officials must be prepared. When the weather acts up, SERVPRO is ready to act fast!

SERVPRO offers property owners no-cost tools for preparing a disaster readiness plan

Richmond, KY (Grassroots Newswire) <Date>—Each September, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) sponsors an awareness eventNational Preparedness Month (http://www.ready.gov/September)to encourage both home and business owners to review and update their emergency preparedness and business and life continuity plans. Julie Roberts, owner of SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties, encourages Richmond, Berea, Lancaster, and Mt. Vernon property owners to take advantage of the information available from FEMA, because advance planning is critical in dealing with and recovering from the unexpected.

“Most home and business owners have taken basic precautions to protect life and property in the event of an emergency like flooding, fire, wind damage, or even malicious attacks,” said Roberts. “In many cases, building codes require clearly marked emergency exits, fire extinguishers, fire and flood drills, and similar preparations. But the missing link for many property owners is a comprehensive emergency plan that provides first responders with the information they need to deal with the emergency quickly and effectively, like the location of shut-off valves, fire suppression system controls, and emergency contact numbers.”

SERVPRO offers tools for both commercial and residential property owners to help address this problem. Business and home owners alike can download the free SERVPRO READY app, and store time-critical contact and property information electronically, in advance, where it can be accessed with a mobile device in seconds if disaster strikes. In addition, when a business designates their local SERVPRO Franchise Professional as their disaster mitigation and restoration provider, SERVPRO professionals will conduct a no-cost assessment of the facility and assist the owner in completing a comprehensive Emergency READY Profile® (ERP). The ERP includes information about emergency contact numbers, priority and high/risk areas, shut-off valve locations and more that can then be stored in the READY app.

“The most effective response to any emergency is a fast response,” says Roberts, “and that means having critical information available and ready to access at a moment’s notice. FEMA statistics* show that as many as 40 percent of businesses never reopen after a major flood disaster. Minimizing downtime and repairs with a quick, effective response effort can help prevent this type of outcome for businesses and can also help families put their homes and lives

back on track in less time and with less stress. Creating a READY profile in advance with SERVPRO’s no-cost tools is well worth the time.”

SERVPRO® of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties specializes in disaster restoration, cleanup and repair services, helping to remediate damage, making it “Like it never even happened,” for both commercial and residential customers. SERVPRO Franchises Take Away Top Honors at 2016 Convention in Las Vegas

8/11/2016 (Permalink)

Keep up our #ServproSummerOfSelfies social media campaign on a red carpet in Las Vegas.

The SERVPRO ownership team, consisting of Tony and Julie Roberts and Mike Parsons, returned from Las Vegas last month after a week of celebrating the accomplishments of their franchises at the 2016 SERVPRO National Convention.  Held at the MGM Grand, Tony, Julie, and Mike took the very hot week (up to 120 degree temperatures) to learn more about our new Operating Software enhancements, increasing customer service rankings, new advancements in water and fire damage cleaning and equipment, as well innovative sales tactics to keep our insurance clients and property managers thinking of the SERVPRO brand.

Ironically while visiting the typically hot and dry town, terrible rain storms flooded the streets, even causing the airport to delay flights.  “I received a flood warning notification on my phone” said Tony Roberts, “and naturally thought it was for Richmond or Berea flooding, and it turned out it was for Las Vegas.”  Then while heading to the room, a leak in the ceiling of the casino caused a small water damage in the slot machine area.  “It’s like they knew SERVPRO was in town!”

The Roberts and Parsons celebrated another year of superior performance at the Awards Banquet.  Their franchises again ranked in the top 100 performers, of over 1600 franchises in the United States and Canada.  They also held on to their spot in the Top Storm Team Volume Producers of all time.  “We are extremely blessed with a great team, a passion for the industry, and the opportunity to help people when they need it most,” said Julie, “the fact that we are continually recognized as being the top performers in our system is just icing on the cake.”

SERVPRO Convention in 2017 is being held in Seattle, and Tony, Julie, and Mike said they plan on taking away top honors again next year.  “This year we’ve been afforded the opportunity to help a lot of people with fire, water and mold damage in Central Kentucky and beyond,” said Mike, “we just keep making it a priority to help those people who need it most, and our customers just keep coming back and spreading the word of our quality work.”

SERVPRO Owner Graduates Small Business Development Class in Williamsburg, Kentucky

    4/12/2016 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties Co-Owner, Julie Roberts, earned recognition for continuing education in Small Business Leadership last month, by completing the Southeast Kentucky Economic Development’s Core Four Business Planning Course.  The four week course, held in Williamsburg, Kentucky, focused on strategic planning for small businesses.  With classes in Marketing Plan Development, Cash Flow, Operations Management, and Funding, the course helps local business owners like Roberts not only start new businesses, but develop existing ones.   Roberts, along with her husband Tony and business partner, Mike Parsons,  have three offices located in Berea, London, and Prestonsburg.  They have been in business since 2005.

“After 11 years of doing business operations on a daily basis, sometimes you forget the small planning phases that are what built your business initially,” Roberts said.  “Core Four helped me take my business back apart, re-evaluate the foundation, and set up a solid plan for our future, both short and long term.”

SKED offers many classes for small business owners throughout Eastern and Central Kentucky.  “SKED has afforded us so many opportunities with business ownership I didn’t dream were possible,” said Roberts.  “I encourage anyone interested in getting into small business ownership, or even interested in further developing what you have, to attend one of these classes.”

Spring Cleaning – How clean is your home’s HVAC system?

    4/5/2016 (Permalink)

As a company specializing in cleaning services of all types and sizes, SERVPRO of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties finds that one of the most overlooked aspects of a clean home is the HVAC system and vents.  Have you ever thought to yourself…I wonder what is in my vents?  It’s a good question.  If you’ve never had your system cleaned before, then consider these benefits…

From the National Air Duct Cleaners Association:

Indoor Air Quality.  In a typical six room home, up to 40 pounds of dust is generated annually just through every day living!  That’s potentially 40 pounds of dust covering the inside of your system and being recirculated through your home every year.

Respiratory Issues and Allergies.  Think of all of the cleaning products, chemicals, dander, etc. present in your home each day.  Those particles are circulated on average 5-7 times per day.  These contaminants could build up in the duct work.  While this doesn’t necessarily mean your system is unhealthy, the buildup and recirculation of these contaminants could pose serious health problems to those with allergies or respiratory and/or autoimmune disorders.

Energy Savings.  According the U.S. Department of Energy, 25 to 40 percent of the energy used to cool or heat a home is wasted.  Contaminant build up inside the system over time causes the unit to work harder and can ultimately shorten the life of your system.  With a clean system, the unit doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain the desired temperature which leads to less energy being used and greater cost effectiveness.

If you haven’t had your HVAC system cleaned for some time – or ever – consider using the professional services of SERVPRO of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties.  Our experienced team can provide you with an affordable quote to have your entire system cleaned and fogged with an EPA registered disinfectant.  Having a clean system is a great way to promote healthy air quality in your home and lower energy costs each month.  Sounds like a great way to kick off your spring cleaning!

Are you “Weather Aware”? Tips for Being Prepared as Storm Season Approaches

    3/29/2016 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties has been involved in emergency storm assistance for many years now and during that time has actively worked with local insurance companies and emergency management teams to assist people in extremely difficult and dangerous situations.  With severe weather season fast approaching our area, it is important to be reminded of some basic safety tips in order to stay prepared and alert during our ever changing weather patterns.

From the Kentucky Division of Emergency Management:

    “When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!”

    • Before a thunderstorm arrives, know the key warning signs:  dark clouds, lightening, and thunder

    • Get informed with a weather radio or by watching the news

    • Have an emergency kit on hand that includes flashlights, battery operated weather radio, first aid kit, food and water, and essential medicines

    • Stay inside and sheltered.  If outside, move indoors or into a vehicle.  Get out of water immediately.  If trapped outside, make yourself as small as possible in a low lying area

    • Make sure to wait at least 30 minutes after the storm has passed before going outside

In addition, in order to be prepared for a tornado:

    • Have a family tornado plan in place and practice a family tornado drill

    • Watch for weather signs like dark greenish skies, large hail, dark low clouds and load roaring sounds

    • Put as many walls and floors between you and the tornado as possible

    • Flying debris is the greatest danger during a tornado

    • If in a mobile home – GET OUT!  Find a neighbor, underground shelter, or permanent structure for safety

As a trusted leader in emergency response for our area, SERVPRO of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties is committed to helping our community be prepared for weather emergencies.  As a 24 hour emergency response partner, SERVPRO is dedicated to providing immediate and professional services to you and your family should the need arise during this severe weather season.

SERVPRO Named to Entrepreneur's Top 10 Franchise List for 7th Consecutive Year

    1/14/2016 (Permalink)

SERVPRO® Named to Entrepreneur’s Top 10 Franchise List

    for 7th Consecutive Year

Cleanup and restoration franchisor retains top ranking in restoration services category and climbs to #4 ranking overall in the 2016 Franchise 500 rankings

Berea, KY (Grassroots Newswire) 1/14/2016 - SERVPRO®, a cleanup and restoration franchise company, maintains its hold on the top ranking in the Restoration Services industry for the 13th consecutive year and moves up to the number four spot overall in the 2016 Franchise 500 rankings from Entrepreneur magazine.* This is the seventh consecutive year SERVPRO has been included in the magazine’s Top 10 list, standing out in a group of more than 951 franchises that qualified for inclusion in the list.

Entrepreneur magazine’s Franchise 500 selection process** uses "objective, quantifiable measures of a franchise operation" to help would-be entrepreneurs identify franchise investment opportunities. Some of the most important factors considered by Entrepreneur in developing the list each year are "financial strength and stability, growth rate and size of the system."

"It’s exciting to be part of a dynamic organization that continues to grow and strives to always provide superior support for its franchisees, and by extension its customers," said Julie Roberts, owner of SERVPRO of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties. "The recognition that the company earns year after year in this prestigious list is confirmation of a commitment to excellence that starts at the top and is evident in the service that each franchisee provides to each and every customer."

According to Roberts, a number of differentiators set SERVPRO apart from the competition and fuel the attractiveness of the company to both existing franchisees and would-be entrepreneurs looking for a strong business opportunity. Key among these are:

? SERVPRO’s strength as a brand with a national footprint, wide-spread market penetration, laser-focused brand messaging, and the ability to create national partnerships with organizations such as the PGA TOUR and the American Red Cross.

? SERVPRO’s commitment to being a learning organization, which keeps training and support at the forefront of the company’s culture and philosophy of success and helps franchisees plan, track, and deliver best-in-class services to consumers.

? SERVPRO’s focus on continued development and support for proprietary software and systems to allow the company’s operational capacity to keep pace with an aggressive growth strategy.

Sue Steen, SERVPRO Industries, Inc., chief executive officer, adds, "One of the potential pitfalls of growing too quickly is outpacing your capacity to train and support the franchisees. SERVPRO® is a conservative company, and early on we took the time to build a strong system and put the building blocks in place to support growth without sacrificing support to our franchisees."

"Today," Steen continues, "as a mature franchise organization with more than 1,700 locations under a single brand, recognition like this makes it clear we are reaping the rewards of having laid a solid foundation and a framework to handle quick growth. As our brand continues to grow, we will continue our winning strategy of supporting and improving upon our infrastructure and investing resources in training and support."

SERVPRO® specializes in fire and water cleanup and restoration services, helping both commercial and residential customers recover from property damage emergencies "Like it never even happened." For more information about SERVPRO® please visit www.SERVPRO.com.

    Franchise Named CAPA Mentor

    12/3/2015 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties is honored to announce that we have been named one of 35 franchises recognized as a Commercial Accounts Program Mentor.  As the SERVPRO brand grows, our reputation has changed from a residential fire and water restoration company to a restoration company that is “Ready for Whatever Happens”.

Because of this success, both locally and nationally, the need for standardized systems to help develop and deliver consistency in the commercial marketplace for disaster recovery services exists.  It has been inspiring to be able to help develop these systems, the training, and help utilize innovative software, sales principles, and structured business practices needed to help establish a Commercial Accounts Program nationally.

It is even more rewarding to be able to help assist franchises through this mentorship program who are newer to commercial disaster recovery, and may need help.  We have committed to help any SERVPRO franchise who selects us as a Commercial Accounts Program Mentor with any assistance needed on a commercial loss, regardless of size.  From managing and producing these losses to scoping, sales, estimation, or resource management, our local team is “Ready for Whatever happens”.  Our team believes in the unilateral vision from our corporate office that these losses need to be structured and systematic, and consistent from coast to coast.

We are committed to using our knowledge, gained right here in Central and Eastern Kentucky, to help those who have clients in need.  We want to take the time to thank each of our clients, both residential and commercial alike, for all of the support given to us over the years.  Without you, our passion of serving those int heir time of need could not happen, and we are eternally grateful.

Home Fire Danger Peaks During Holiday Season

    11/23/2015 (Permalink)

As the holiday season approaches and families gear up for decorating their homes and hosting large gatherings of friends and family, Anthony Roberts of SERVPRO of Madison, Rockcastle, Garrard, & Lincoln Counties reminds homeowners to take note of some sobering statistics about home fire safety from the National Fire Prevention Association:

  • Cooking equipment is the leading cause of home structure fires. The three peak days for home cooking fires are Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and Christmas Eve.1
  • Candles fires peak in December. The top three days for candles fires are Christmas Day, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.2
  • “These statistics are a serious reminder of how the excitement of holiday entertaining can quickly turn into a life-altering fire or even a tragic injury or death,” says Roberts. “While glowing candles and elaborate meals set the stage for a great holiday get-together, homeowners need to exercise extra care in controlling the dangerous potential for fires.”

According to the NFPA3, unattended cooking is by far the leading cause of home cooking fires, with frying posing the greatest fire risk and electric ranges posing a higher risk than gas ranges. Range top cooking in general started the majority of home cooking fires and caused 86 percent of related civilian deaths for the reporting period.

While incidents of candle fires peaked in 2001 and have been falling since, candles are still one of the top 10 causes of U.S. home fires, according to the NFPA. As with cooking fires, unattended or abandoned candles account for a large portion of candle fires–almost 20 percent–but the most frequent cause of candle fires is placing the candle too close to something that can burn, like curtains, decorations or furniture.

“It’s easy to see why cooking and candle fires both peak during the holiday season,” says Roberts, “and it’s also easy to see why homeowners need to take extra care when decorating their homes or entertaining. A moment’s inattention at the stove or a guest repositioning a candle on a tabletop may be all it takes to turn the festivities into a fight to save property and lives. While our business is fire and water damage restoration and we stand ready to help at a moment’s notice if disaster does strike, our sincere hope is that our friends and neighbors will enjoy a fire-free and festive holiday season.”
